- DESCRIPTION

From the ruins of the birthplace of techno, Detroit Underground launches DU-LAB, a series of highly limited cassettes and digital downloads with photography by Monochrome Laboratory. The first release, entitled Drudged Torn Routine by Japan’s Yu Miyashita aka Yaporigami. features IDM, industrial and power-noise inspired recordings with conjugated titles such as Am, Is, Are, and Was followed by B-side offerings Were, Be, Being and Been. All eight tracks feature stark, hypnotic, percussion heavy approaches that mutate constantly, shifting between intense home listening sessions to late night dance floor fare that further expands on the experimental dance tangents reflected in the label’s previous vinyl and CD releases. Also present is DU’s further commitment to graphic design as part and parcel of the package. The label stays true to form here creating hand printed inserts, coloured cassettes, and cases. The LAB series is a welcome compliment and strong addition to the Detroit Underground catalogue with photography by Monochrome Laboratory based in Berlin Germany.

- DESCRIPTION (JP)

- REVIEW

Igloo Magazine - "The opening track on Yamanashi-based Yaporigami’s Drudged Torn Routine positively throbs with the ghosts of Detroit’s silenced machines informing the minds and moves of its living residents. The album sounds less like the classic Detroit techno of yore yet props are given and that old techno sound is clearly represented by Yu Miyashita aka Yaporigami. Each track develops into a strange, hypnotic creation that sounds timeless, as if droning on for longer than you’ve been alive."

Stray Landings - "It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes the Yaporigami work stand out. Indeed, it’s difficult to tease out any specific feature of Miyashita’s music that can be isolated and examined more closely. Instead, every idea woven is from the same fabric, each texture intertwined with another, anonymously blending together in stealthy unification. Sure, there are semblances of convention that we may cling to as a listener - the pounding thud of peak-time kicks on ‘Am’, for example - but it’s impossible to separate these features from the overarching structure, so skillfully entwined are the elements of each and every piece. "
