A Slave to Concepts You Never Defined Yourself
Whether in words or in music, don’t lie.
The moment you do, both words and music become strangely distant.
They may have come from you, yet somehow they no longer feel like your own.
Are people really so insensitive to this sense of dissonance?
I still don’t fully understand Mallarmé’s writing.
But somehow, I can sense the necessity behind his choice of such difficult and obscure language — as though there were simply no other way for him to write what he had to write.
In this respect, I think Valéry practiced something resembling Hisaishi’s approach:
maintaining the rigor of one’s inner world while finding a way to translate it into a point of contact with society.
And I think it was undoubtedly Artaud who refused to lie to himself and followed that refusal all the way to the furthest extreme of madness.
This is why I feel such a strong aversion when I see people who have never once questioned the idea of being a “winner” — an idea largely determined by the era and society into which they happened to be born — and who then derive a sense of superiority from the status, wealth, or recognition they have acquired within that system.
Is that really what you yourself desired?
What is success?
What is wealth?
What is happiness?
What does it even mean to win?
Have you ever defined any of these things for yourself?
If you simply follow concepts you have never defined, and then take pride in having won the game those concepts created, you remain, in the end, a slave to them.
It isn’t “elites” themselves that I dislike.
What I cannot stand is the superiority built upon that lie: never questioning one’s own desires or values, mistaking the standards handed down by society for one’s own, and then believing oneself superior to others according to those very standards.
Whether in words, in music, or in the way you live:
at the very least, don’t lie to yourself.
