Music That Doesn’t Disappear After It Ends
When I first heard AFX’s Analord series / Chosen Lords, I was overwhelmed by the feeling that I had never heard music so strange, complex, and singular before.
Its form was so far outside the ordinary, yet it never felt merely eccentric or experimental. It remained, overwhelmingly, music.
The structures, textures, and developments were difficult to describe through any familiar vocabulary.
And yet they reached the body directly.
That experience has stayed with me, and I think it became one of the standards by which I have measured my own music ever since.
I am not interested in music that simply passes by as something pleasant and easily consumable.
I am drawn to music that approaches with a strange depth.
Music that does not easily leave your mind once you have heard it.
Music that leaves something behind, somewhere beyond the question of whether or not you fully understood it.
Music that continues to resonate inside you after it has ended, sometimes as though it has been physically inscribed into the body.
By now, I feel that I am making this kind of music myself, or at least that I have spent many years trying to reach that place.
To me, good music is not something that disappears when it ends.
It is something that changes the person who listened to it, even if only slightly.
