Religion and Art

To devote oneself to what is called “art” is, in effect, almost synonymous with being a religious practitioner. This recognition / understanding has now come very close to certainty. By “religious practitioner,” I do not mean someone who belongs to an existing religion. I mean someone who takes upon themselves, through their own life, the structure of how they perceive the world, what they believe in, and by what means they may be able to save themselves. The word “founder” or “religious founder” carries, especially in the present age, a strong air of cultish dubiousness. Yet originally, it can also refer to the one who first embodied a certain worldview, ethic, and form of salvation. Artists, be religious practitioners. First, be the founder who saves yourself. Whether that path was truly a path will one day be judged by society / the world, through comparison with the great figures of the past, or through resemblance / affinity to them. But this is not something one becomes by trying to become it. If, by purely following the blueprint of one’s own soul, that path rises to the surface of its own accord, in a state of natural non-action, then that is the path. It is nothing other than being as one is. Nothing more, nothing less. It is not a matter of becoming, but of being so. Not becoming it by trying to become it, but having originally been so.
